Tonto uniform and equipment was part
of the second series costumes for Captain Action, and was only available
in a ring box. The set includes a Hood Face Mask, Shirt and Pants,
Moccasins, Gun, Quiver, Knife, Headband and Feather, Indian Bow, Arrows,
Gun Belt Holster and Scabbard, and Eagle "Taka". A look at the ring
can be found on our Captain
Action Ring Page.

Tonto's Uniform consists of a shirt
with 4 snaps in the back and a pair of pants with a single snap.
Both are trimmed in brown plastic trim. The pants are unlabeled,
but the shirt contains a tag that says "Captain Action 1966" This
is interesting because the set was released in 1967, and all the other
second issue sets have 1967 tags. This leads us to believe that the
set, at least in part was designed as part of the original costumes for
Captain Action. For one possible explanation, follow this link:

An interesting note: While it would
have been far more plausible to have Captain Action portray the Lone Ranger
while Action Boy donned the Tonto uniform, it wouldn't do much justice
to Tonto, along with looking awkward to have the faithful Native American
a head shorter than his masked companion. For those who felt that
Action boy would have been a better choice for Kato the same thing can
be said. So we have a strange case of double (or triple) identity.

Hood Face Mask and Headband and Feather.
Yes, the backing card calls it a "Hood" face mask, although in what way
it is a hood is not really clear. The headband and feather are a
single piece, molded in brown vinyl, and are separate from the mask.
Really a striking sculpt. While Ideal did a fine job on the first
series of uniforms, the attention to detail, variety of accessories and
overall imagination they displayed in the second issues really stands out.

Moccasins. The pair is molded
in brown vinyl and there is not a distinct right and left one. I
have checked a bunch of them and the laces all go the same way. White
painted laces and a multicolor decoration on the toe. They fit well
and look comfortable.

Gun. Molded in beige plastic
with silver finish and a black painted handle. The same classic six
shooter used by his pal, the Lone
Ranger. It was also in the Phantom
set at one point (before being replaced by the 45s), and it appears in
the weapons arsenal.

|
Quiver and Arrows. The quiver
is molded in beige plastic and the handle is vinyl (no melts!). The
arrows are beige plastic, and the four of them are each tipped with a silver
arrow head and have feathers painted Red, Blue, Green and Yellow, respectively.
|
|
|
Knife. Beige plastic with silver
painted blade and black painted handle. Well designed slightly over
sized, one of the best looking knives in the Captain Action world.
It would have made a great addition to the weapons arsenal, but the arsenal
predates it.

|
Indian Bow. Molded in beige
plastic with black painted grip and string, and red accents on the front.
There appear to have been two versions, one with a rubber band in place
of the plastic molded string. Boxed examples have been found with
no string and a shriveled rubber band in its place (see the boxed set above).

Gun Belt Holster and Scabbard.
Three items for the price of one. Beige rubber with yellow painting.
Like the other belts, will melt the living daylights out of anything left
in it.
|
 |
|
Eagle "Taka". Beige plastic
painted brown, yellow and white. Very fragile talons, it is usually
found without its feet. One of four animals to inhabit Captain Actions
universe, along with Krypto the Superdog, Aquaboy's Octo and Klem, Action
Boys panther. Technically Spiderman's Spider is a grappling hook,
not a pet...
